Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam is a concert choir which was founded more than 175 years ago. In its illustrious past, Toonkunst had strong ties with the renowned Concertgebouw Orchestra and contributed to productions led by great conductors such as Willem Mengelberg, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Eugen Jochum, Eduard van Beinum and Bernard Haitink. Since the early 1970’s, Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam has performed annually with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra with the resident conductors Anton Kersjes and Hartmut Haenchen as well as many guest conductors such as Ken-ichiro Kobayashi, Jean Fournet and Sir Yehudi Menuhin. More concerts were given with other major Dutch orchestras. |

Toonkunst's repertoire includes masterpieces such as J.S. Bach's Passions and High Mass, Requiems by Mozart, Verdi, Brahms and Bruckner, the Stabat Mater and the Mass in D by Dvořák, as well as the chorus parts of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Szymanovski's Third, Liszt's Dante and Faust Symphony plus the Second, Third and Eighth Symphonies by Mahler.
But the choir also sings modern works such as Kodály's and Diepenbrock's Te Deum and both Hendrik Andriessen's Te Deums. In 2002, Toonkunst successfully combined its annual performance of St Matthew's Passion with Frank Martin's Golgotha. In 2003, it brought Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms together with Szymanovsky's Stabat Mater. In 2005, the choir celebrated its 175th year with "Tenebrae" (Darkness), a new composition by Hans Kox, written especially for Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam.
